Notes on Homework Exercises...

C. Homework Exercises to either accompany Lab work or stand alone:
As mentioned in the Introduction above, there is some overlap between these Homework Exercises and the Pre-Lab and Lab Assignments. In a fully online course they either cover most of the same topics or they approach the same topics from an alternative slant. In the Hybrid course taught Winter 2011, the Homework Exercises that were not used are abbreviated HW and are in italics below. The Homework Exercises that were used are abbreviated EX and are in straight text. All the material below is available as Word and pdf files in this document.

Homework Exercises have the following Learning Outcomes:
•    HW 1: Describe Earth’s ocean surface on global maps by identifying ocean areas and boundaries; and use various methods to measure scaled global distances.
•    EX2: Explain the opening of the North Atlantic seafloor using maps and the geologic column.
•    HW 3: Discuss plate tectonics and plate interactions, and recognize the effect of seasons on sea life.
•    HW 4: Explain the differences in beach sands by analyzing photo-micrographs of sand samples to determine their origins and relative ages.
•    HW 5: Describe the properties of sea water by changing variables such as temperature, salinity, and density.
•    HW 6: Explain variations in insolation by simulating how sunlight strikes a spherical surface.
•    HW 7:    (called EX 5 during Winter 2011 Hybrid due to the week in which it occurred)
Explain the occurrence and effects of Atlantic hurricane storm surges.
•    HW 8: Describe the ocean’s major currents by analyzing global maps.
•    EX 9: (called EX 6 during Winter 2011 Hybrid due to the week for which it was planned; however it had to be delayed until Week 8 of the course.)
Describe the major types of surf by analyzing the surf and beach zone; and describe the     offshore dangers of longshore transport and rip currents.
•    EX 10: (called EX 8 during Winter 2011 Hybrid due to the week in which it occurred)
Explain the conditions that produce varying sizes and types of tides
•    Optional or additional homework/short essay questions (called EX 9 and EX10 during Winter 2011 Hybrid due to the weeks in which they occurred): Report on the criteria and processes that mold the habitat and biologic members of the ocean community by viewing and analyzing all or a portion of the 8 part Blue Planet: Seas of Life, dvd/video series. Details on how to gain access to the series is in the course website.
