The final exam will be in class on Wednesday May 4 (not cumulative - covering material since the midterm).

FORMAT:

PART A (32 points):
Factual short answer questions, similar to those on the midterm. There will be some choice as to which questions you answer.

PART B (28 points):
One brief essay question (250 words max.). I will give you two questions and you will answer one.

PART C (40 points):
Textual analysis. I will give you a short passage of early English. You will be asked to identify the period from which it comes, and to comment briefly on aspects of spelling, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary.

MATERIAL:

Middle English I: Norman Conquest/Anglo-Norman
BBS 144-160. Get the big picture about Middle English. You won't need to know specific words, although if you do know some, it might make an essay a little jazzier!

Middle English II: Spelling, pronunciation, morphology
BBS 161-170 for the general picture, but no specific examples from there. You just need to know the same material from the PowerPoint that you did for the quiz.

Middle English III: Syntax, verbs
BBS 170-173. What follows on 173-184 is an analysis of Middle English texts. Although you won't be required to go into the kind of detail that the book does, this will give you a rough idea of what you should be looking for in Part C.

Early Modern English I: English, Latin, status
BBS 185-193 and PowerPoint. You should know some specific example words, as on the quiz.

Early Modern English II: Letters, Spelling, Phonology
Based on the PowerPoint. Know specific examples as noted on the PowerPoint.

Early Modern English III: Shakespeare, King James Bible
Based on the PowerPoint. Material as on the quiz.

Early American English
Based on the PowerPoint. Know the general picture and some example words.

20th/21st Century Contemporary US/Canada
Based on the PowerPoint. You will need to know the sound changes and some example words.
