Participating in Discussions
New discussions will appear on your recent activity feed on your home screen in Canvas.
-
Here we can see that there are 2 new discussion post to be read.
To find older discussions, select your course from "Courses & Groups".
From your course home page, click on the "Discussions" link in the course navigation.
Here you will find:
- “Pinned Discussions” at the top of the page. These are important for frequently used discussions that your professor has chosen to pin to the top of your list.
- Open or active discussions where you are able to participate.
- At the bottom are discussions which have been closed for comment by the professor. While you can still read these discussions, you will not be able to post further comments.
You will also find at the top of the page:
- A search box you where you can search all discussions by title, content, or author.
- The "Unread" button which will filter the discussions to display only those which you have not read.
- The "Assignments" button which will display only those discussions for which your participation is required as part of an assignment.
- If your professor has enabled students to create discussions, the create discussions button will appear here.
From within a discussion you can:
- Search all replies and/or authors.
- Filter to display only unread posts.
- Collapse and expand all threads.
- Subscribe to a discussion to be notified of any future responses.
Click on the top-most reply box to respond to the original discussion topic.
This will open the text editor where you can compose your response. Click "Post Reply" when you finish your response.
-
If you choose, you can also add video or audio recordings to enhance your response to the discussion topic. This is explained further in the “Creating audio and video content in Canvas” tutorial.
To reply to another student's response, click "Reply" beneath their response to open the text editor. Construct your response and click "Post Reply".
