Creating and Enabling A Custom Grading Scheme
The last two sections have discussed how to enable the default Canvas grading scheme. This section discusses both how to create one's own grading scheme and how to enable this custom grading scheme for an assignment.
Navigate to an assignment, then choose to display grade as letter grade.
Click on the hyperlinked text 'View Grading Scheme' to reveal the default grading scheme. Then click 'manage grading schemes'.
Click the 'Add grading scheme' button.
Create your custom grading scheme by adjusting percentages appropriately (1). When done, click 'Save' (2).
This example below demonstrates the creation of a 'Simple Letter Grade' scheme. This scheme removes all intermediate grades (e.g., B+, B-, C+, C-) with adjacent passing grades separated by 10 percentage points.
To apply this new grading scheme, navigate to the assignment editor, choose 'Letter Grade' as before, and then click 'View Grading Scheme'.
Note: One way to conveniently find the assignment again is clicking on 'Assignments' in the left-hand course navigation bar.
This time, click 'Select Another Scheme' in order to access your custom scheme.
From the side list, choose your desired custom grading scheme (1), and then click 'Use This Grading Standard' (2).
Click 'Done' to confirm your selection.
Note: After finishing this step, the only scores allowed for input will be those defined in the scheme. For example, if you define a grading scheme without the grade 'C+', Canvas will not understand a grade of 'C+' and will input a dash instead.
Click 'Update Assignment' to save all changes.
To confirm that the custom grading scheme took effect, return to your grade book and input a score in the appropriate column.
Click out of the box, and you will see the grade rendered as a letter grade corresponding to your custom scheme.
In this example, using the custom theme results in a score of 45 points being treated as an ‘A,’ whereas in the default scheme this grade was equal to an 'A-'. All grades added to this assignment subsequent to this will also be evaluated against your custom grading scheme.
These changes are reflected in the student view as well.
