Using the Panopto iPad App to Record and Upload Lectures

This page shows how to use the Panopto iOS application for iPad.

Login

To access the account menu, tap the icon in the upper left corner of the screen [1]. Select "Sign in" from the account menu [2].

[Note: You will only have to complete Steps 3-4 "Setting your Panopto site" the first time you login with the Panopto iPad App.]

The app will then prompt you to enter an address in order to "Set your Panopto site."  To access Panopto for BC Canvas, enter the address "bc.hosted.panopto.com" in the field as shown below [3].  Next, click "Sign in" [4].  Ensure that "BCCanvas" is chosen from the drop down menu, and then click the blue bar below labeled "Sign in" [5]. 

Sign into Canvas using your BC credentials [7].  You can either tap "Sign in" on the Canvas screen or click "Go" from the iPad's touchscreen keyboard.  Canvas will then request your authorization to provide Panopto access to your BC Canvas account.  Tap "authorize" [8]. 

Recording and Uploading Lectures to your BC Canvas Course Folders

To record a lecture using the Panopto recorder, or to upload a previously recorded lecture (for example, a lecture recorded with the iPad camera), tap "Record & upload" from the menu [1].  Course folders will display in the window on the right side of the screen.  If the course folder does not immediately display, tap "Browse" to reveal additional course folders.  Select the course to which you'd like to record or upload a lecture by tapping on the folder title [2].   

 

Recording a New Session 

If you are recording a new session, give the session a title using the touch screen keyboard and then tap "Start Recording."  If prompted by the Panopto Recorder, allow the app access to both your iPad's microphone and camera.  To start and stop the recording, tap the red button [1].  To switch the camera's view, tap the camera icon [2].  To cancel the recording altogether and return to the menu screen, tap "Cancel."        

 

When the recording is finished, you will then have the option to either "Use the video" you just recorded, or "retake."  These options are listed in either corner at the bottom of the screen. To watch the video before uploading, tap the "play" button in the middle of the screen.

On the next screen, tap "Upload" in the upper right corner of the window.  The Panopto App will display the uploading and processing status in the window.  Notice that you can pause the upload, or alternatively, delete the session at any point during this process.   

 

Upload a Session 

In some cases, you may want to upload a video file previously recorded with either the iPad camera, or a different recording application other than Panopto.  To upload a video, first select "Record & upload" from the account menu [1].  Next, pick the course folder destination either by tapping the folder or browsing a longer list of folder titles [2].  Give the session a title [3].  Select "Choose a video" [4] and then allow Panopto to access your photos and videos by clicking "OK" [5].        

 

Select the video you want to upload from your videos or camera roll by tapping the video thumbnail image [1].  You may tap the "play" button to view the video before selecting "Use" in the upper right corner [2].  Tap "Upload" in the upper right corner to add your video to the course folder [3].    

 

The video file will then begin the uploading practice and confirm that the upload is complete.
