Class Reflection Grading Rubric

Class Reflection Grading Rubric

Reflections are meant to be short and sweet – one paragraph (at least 50 words) – and should not take you long to write.  In your reflection you should address what was covered in class from one of three perspectives:  a practical take away for your work or career, an important unanswered question, or an interesting connection or insight.

Note on Late Postings: 1 point will be deducted for a reflection that is delivered late, but within one week of the deadline. 1 additional point is deducted for each week past the deadline.

Grade Criteria
5

Reflection provides evidence that you both engaged with the class and connected the classroom experience to something "outside," whether it be one of the readings, your work, your career aspirations, or some business example. Given that the class reflection is supposed to be even briefer than the reading report this connection can be very brief but it should be specific.

Example: if you describe something a guest speaker said and say that it will be useful to you in your career, that would likely receive a score of 4, but if you say specifically how it would be useful (for example describe a specific skill or situation in which you could make use of that specific insight) then that would probably receive a grade of 5.

Note that unlike the reading report, you do not need to go into detail about a connection (not enough space) but you do want to be specific.

4.5 Reflection satisfies the criteria for a grade of 4 but includes at least some elements of the criteria for a 5 without offering the same level of specifics or insight. For example: you briefly describe an example that relates to the class but don't draw much in the way of insight from the example.
4 Reflection provides evidence that you engaged with the class and made sense of it "on its own terms." This might include briefly describing some part of class that you found useful with a brief explanation of why.
3 Reflection provides some specific discussion of the class with evidence of some engagement, but not enough to meet the criteria for a grade of 4.
2 Reflection is shorter than 50 words. It mentions the class but provides no evidence of engagement.
1 Reflection is only a few words. No specific mention of the class is made, but, by some stretch of the imagination the reflection can be construed as vaguely related to a course topic.
