Reading Response Grading Rubric
Reading Response Grading Rubric
The basic requirements for a reading response are that it:
- be at least 200 words in length
- address at least one issue from the required reading for the week
Note on Late Postings: 1 point will be deducted for a response that is delivered late, but within one week of the deadline. 1 additional point is deducted for each week past the deadline.
Grade | Criteria |
5 |
Response provides evidence that you have engaged with a reading on your own terms and relate it to things outside the reading. This might include one ore more of the following:
While a response of this quality will likely exceed the 200 word minimum, it should still be a relatively brief post (a few paragraphs at most). In this context the phrases "substantial" and "detailed" are meant to mean "some substance" and "a few details." You should say enough so that the reader senses that there is something substantial there and that you could (given time) say more. |
4.5 | Response satisfies the criteria for a grade of 4 but includes at least some elements of the criteria for a 5 without offering the same level of specifics or insight. For example: you briefly describe an example that relates to the reading but don't draw much in the way of insight from the example. |
4 | Response provides evidence that you have engaged with the reading and made sense of it "on its own terms." This might include a thoughtful summary of what you consider to be key points in the reading, with perhaps some brief comments. |
3 | Response provides some specific discussion of the reading with evidence of some analysis, but not enough to meet the criteria for a grade of 4. |
2 | Response is shorter than 200 words. It mentions the readings but provides no evidence of in depth reading or analysis. |
1 | Response is substantially shorter than 200 words. No specific mention of the readings is made, but, by some stretch of the imagination the reflection can be construed as vaguely related to a course topic. |
